Seniors with Alzheimer's or dementia may face major problems
in their life. There are many factors for seniors which may prevent Alzheimer's
or types of dementia. A healthy lifestyle may reduce your loved one's risk of
developing degenerative diseases. There is a lot of misleading information on
the internet to prevent dementia. Here are six easy steps your loved one may
take that may reduce his or her risk of developing Alzheimer's.
1. Promote a Healthy Heart
Heart disease is one of the most common diseases in seniors.
But, seniors can control the risk factors of heart diseases like smoking or eat
a high-fat diet. If your loved one has a good heart health then it may lower
his or her risk of memory loss or vascular dementia. High blood pressure and
heart disease may cause vascular dementia in seniors. There are some simple
changes your loved one can make to ensure a healthy heart. It may include
exercising, eating low fat or sugary foods, and quitting cigarettes.
2. Practice Brain Simulating Activities
Seniors with higher education levels may have a low risk of
cognitive decline. Well educated seniors may have better memory and concentration
levels than others. A strong mind may help to lower the negative impact in the
brain of seniors caused by Alzheimer’s or dementia.
3. Protect Your Head from Injuries or Concussions
Studies show that head traumas, injuries, or concussion may
lead to Alzheimer's. If your loved one had a head injury while playing sports
then it may increase his or her risk of Alzheimer's. Contact sports like
football or hockey may cause head injuries or severe concussions. To cut your
loved one's risk of head injury, always suggest him or her to wear a seat belt
when driving. Senior should wear safety gears and a helmet when cycling or
running. Falling and tripping are the two major causes of injuries in seniors.
If your loved one has limited mobility or vision problems, then make the house
safer for him or her. Clear out the things which may cause your loved one to
fall or trip down while walking.
4. Avoid Alcohol
Binge drinking may cause liver failure and drunk-driving
tragedies. The third major risk of drinking alcohol in seniors is dementia.
Seniors with an alcohol addiction may develop Alzheimer's or dementia. If your
loved one drinks more than five drinks in a day then he or she may enhance his
or her risk of developing dementia. There are many options for seniors to
control their addiction to alcohol. Seniors may drink red wine as a healthy
alternative to alcohol.
5. Reduce Stress & Boost Social Interaction
Seniors with an active social life may lead a more happy and
healthy life. Social interaction may also reduce your loved one's risk of
developing Alzheimer's. Many social events and activities promote mental
simulation which may protect the brain.
6. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep deprivation may cause mood changes or lowers reaction
time in seniors. If your loved one remains awake for 24 hours then he or she
may begin to hallucinate or have a mental breakdown. But, small disruptions
during sleep may lead to Alzheimer’s.
